Credit ‘wear’ Credit is Due — You won’t believe who

Longtime readers here know when it comes to the subject of pantyhose, I am always right.  About everything really.

When ActSensuous was born in 2001, it was I who — on our first website — coined the phrases “bare-legs movement” and “bare-legs culture.”  (Of course, in 2009 when this blog launched, I changed the bare to “bear” and you all know why.)

Also on our first website, I blamed actress Sarah Jessica Parker in her role as Carrie Bradshaw in the “Sex and the City” TV series (and later, movies) for starting the whole bear-legs movement.

Ever since, she has stood as the bear legs villain of all time.

Besides on our website, I’ve also vilified SJP in this blog.

Then, one of our longtime readers and most prolific commenters, Brian W., in August 2013, made this comment:

Hi Robin,

You are amazing!  (Alright, alright, I added that part.  Here’s Brian W.’s real comment:)

I mentioned in one of my previous comments about Candace Bushnell, the newspaper columnist and author of the novel “Sex and the City” that would later be adapted into a TV and movie series.  Candace goes bare legged for all seasons after receiving advice from a gay fashion expert telling her that “No woman should wear pantyhose, especially in the winter.”  That is why the Carrie Bradshaw character is based on Ms. Bushnell’s personal experiences, and going bare-legged is one of them.

Actress Sarah Jessica Parker arrives for a special ceremony hosted by ActSensuous last month.

That comment got me thinking that, perhaps, I was wrong (this one time only) and Sarah Jessica Parker wasn’t the real bad guy in the bear-legs movement.

Then, I thought Naaaaaah, SJP has to be the villain, as she always has been the face (OK, the legs, actually) of the very bear-legs culture itself.

Still, in addition to Brian W.’s comment in 2013, I had been noticing more and more pictures of SJP wearing pantyhose in movies, at movie premieres, media appearances, publicity events, and often, even when she’s out and about.

What?  How could this be?

After seeing so many pics of SJP in pantyhose, coupled with the facts from Brian W.’s comment about Bushnell, I realized that I really was wrong, and SJP had been wrongly accused by me.

After all, SJP made an appearance during a Chanel event in August 2011 wearing a pair of the high-end clothing, handbags and accessories retailer’s pantyhose, which sold for $250.  Seriously, $250.  I mean, who does that?

Yes, it was time for me to open my eyes and my mind, and take notice of the former SATC star.

So, a couple of weeks ago, to make up for my having falsely accused her of starting the bear-legs movement, ActSensuous invited SJP to a special function, which she cheerfully accepted.

Thus, in the headline of this post: Credit ‘wear’ Credit is Due — You won’t believe who, the “who” is one Sarah Jessica Parker.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking:

Has Robin lost her mind?  Was she paid off?  Did I log on to the wrong blog?

Let me assure you, readers … all is well and good.

It’s just that in doing my research for this post, I found way more pictures of SJP wearing pantyhose than many other celebs who’ve been praised several times in this blog by me, and also by some of you in your comments.

In fact, the more I investigated, the further I became convinced that SJP is not the villain I’d been making her out to be since 2001.

Walking off stage, Sarah Jessica Parker smiles at ActSensuous staff and a cheering audience.

And in graciously accepting the ActSensuous invitation to be honored in this blog, SJP didn’t disappoint, always arriving in style at the Space Coast Imperial Palace .

And during the three-day celebration, SJP always showed up in fabulous outfits, complemented by some awesome high heels, and showing off a few different styles of pantyhose.

As amazing as SJP looks in pantyhose, it’s a mystery to me why she ever would want to be seen bear-legged again.

Seeing SJP in beautiful outfits and pantyhose during the 3-day award ceremony, only reinforced in my mind what I had been seeing the past few years.

One of the movies in which she starred, “I Don’t Know How She Does It”  (2011), was not only a cute story, but it featured SJP as a corporate executive who has to learn how to juggle her rise to the top at a financial management company along with her family responsibilities.

As the movie was set in Boston during the winter months, and mostly, because SJP played a corporate exec, it was fitting that she always wore skirts or skirt suits, heels and pantyhose.  And not just pantyhose, but often sheer nude pantyhose.

This made the movie and SJP’s character more realistic, and that isn’t always the case in motion pictures of this kind.

By the way, as a side note, Olivia Munn played a junior associate at the firm, and she dressed in proper business attire, as well.  And while it’s not that unusual to see Olivia Munn in pantyhose (at publicity events and often just out and about these days), it was absolutely wonderful to see her (finally) wearing sheer nude pantyhose.

Here’s the thing (and I’ve said this … what, about a thousand times regarding different celebs?): When Olivia goes back and watches “I Don’t Know How She Does It,” and sees herself looking as amazing as she did in sheer nude pantyhose, why wouldn’t she want to dress this way all the time?  Or, at least, more often.

Am I right, people?  Are you hearing me out there?  Look at those gorgeous gams on Olivia Munn.

Back to the ActSensuous award ceremony: Don’t think for a minute that the three days were all just fun and games.

After all, SJP had always been the signature client of the Grizzly, yet, here she was receiving the ActSensuous Credit “wear” Credit is Due award.

You remember the Grizzly.  He held his own celebration a while back, handing out the inaugural Grizzly Award to that total “fashion” witch, Stacy London, of “What Not to Wear.”  Now London definitely is the most deserving recipient of the Grizzly Award.

You’re with me on this, right readers?

Still, it was SJP who put the Grizzly on the map, and he wasn’t about to let her go so easily.

SJP's moment on the red carpet is interrupted by the Grizzly during the ActSensuous award ceremony for her last month.
SJP’s moment on the red carpet is interrupted by the Grizzly during the ActSensuous award ceremony for her last month.

It appears our security was not up to snuff because the Grizzly crashed the event, trying to talk SJP into staying in his camp.

He greeted her on the red carpet with a bottle of what looked to be some very fine Champagne.

I almost felt sorry for the Grizzly, as he was rebuked by SJP on the red carpet, surrounded by a horde of paparazzi and adoring onlookers.

But the Grizzly is not discouraged so easily.

He wasn’t about to let his most famous and best client go, without trying every trick in the book to woo her back.

And, somehow, the Grizzly was able to sneak backstage the next day, where he tried to entice SJP with flowers and a box of Godiva chocolates.

Fittingly for the occasion, he even wore a tuxedo.

We’ve gotta give the Grizzly props for his creativity and style in going all-out in his efforts to win back his best client.

He certainly won some points with SJP for that backstage maneuver, yet, she once again found a way to resist the Grizzly’s advances.

Apparently, she was now enjoying her new-found attention and appreciation for being a more pantyhose-friendly celebrity.

Bear-at-Entrance-Finally, in a last-ditch effort, the Grizzly pulled out all the stops.

Several days after the ActSensuous award ceremony, while SJP was back home relaxing, the Grizzly did the unthinkable:

He showed up at the star’s estate home.

SJP had shunned all the Grizzly’s attempts to woo her back.

It had been a long partnership between her and the bear, and it couldn’t have been easy for her to keep turning him down.

Nevertheless, SJP was convicted about wearing pantyhose and finally putting the distinction of being the Grizzly’s signature client behind her.

Bear boomboxSo, taking a page from the 1989 John Cusack movie, “Say Anything,” the Grizzly parked himself on SJP’s and Matthew Broderick’s property, and facing her bedroom window, played the song “Baby Come Back” from the band, Player in 1977.

You know the lyrics: “Baby, come back.  You can blame it all on me.  I was wrong and I just can’t live without you.”

SJP-windowThe Grizzly was desperate to salvage his Number One and favorite client, and he’d stop at nothing to keep Sarah Jessica Parker.

Take heart, Grizzly, you might have lost SJP, but there are plenty of other suspects you could go after.

One such candidate is Candace Bushnell.

This former columnist for The New York Observer, and current novelist and television producer who authored SATC, is more to blame for the bear-legs movement than SJP ever was.

As reader and frequent commenter, Brian W. stated, Bushnell, 57, was too easily persuaded to ditch pantyhose by a gay fashion designer.

I wear bare legs most of the year,” Bushnell said during an interview with The Mirror, an online tabloid.  “It’s kind of a fashion thing.  A New York designer decreed that women should never wear pantyhose, not even in winter.  They’re just not sexy.  I just shave my legs.

She “wears” bare legs?  More like she wears a bear’s legs.  “It’s kind of a fashion thing?”  And pantyhose are “just not sexy?”  OK, does Bushnell sound like a prolific novelist and TV producer to you?   I think she’s easily influenced.  She’s certainly confused.

At least 90 percent of the male population and millions of females throughout the world (such as me) think pantyhose are the sexiest thing a woman could ever wear.

Oh, and shaving one’s legs ain’t exactly some closely-guarded secret known only to celebrities, Bushnell.  And, if you think just shaving will make your legs look sexy, uh, yeah … that’s not going to happen for you.

It’s too bad Bushnell was so easily brainwashed against wearing pantyhose.

Still, she might never have been much of a pantyhose wearer in the first place.  In a Google search, I could find only two pictures of her in pantyhose.  In the photo at left, Bushnell actually showed up dressed like this to a television station’s event.  Real professional, Bushnell.

How is an accomplished author and a television producer so easily influenced about how to dress by a gay fashion designer?

But that is exactly what happened.  Once, when asked during an online interview about the best fashion advice she ever received, Bushnell said:

“Isaac Mizrahi once told me that a lady never, ever wears pantyhose. Even if it’s snowing and 20 degrees outside.”

Wait, THAT was the best fashion advice Bushnell ever received?  And it made sense to her?

Now I say instead of being the next client for the Grizzly, I think she should be eaten by the Grizzly.

Candace Bushnell told Vogue Magazine online during an interview in 2010,
Candace Bushnell told Vogue Magazine online during an interview in 2010, “I’m not Carrie Bradshaw.”

Yes, it was Bushnell who wrote the SATC TV series, which aired from 1998 to 2004, featuring high-society women in New York City who wear the fashions of the day, including fabulous heels, but sans the pantyhose.  That show spearheaded the launch of the bear-legs movement.

So, really, Candace Bushnell — not Sarah Jessica Parker — is the culprit who instigated the bear-legs culture.

Yet, years later (2010), Bushnell herself wore sheer pantyhose for an interview with an online fashion magazine.

Perhaps Bushnell is finally growing up?

Maybe she’s still confused.

Another suspect the Grizzly ought to go after is Patricia Field, the costume designer for SATC, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Costumes for a Series (Sex and the City 2002).

Four out of five models wear pantyhose during a 2012 fashion event hosted by Costume Designer Patricia Field in New York City.
Four of five models wear pantyhose during a 2012 fashion event hosted by costume designer Patricia Field in New York City.   How boring the poor model in the middle looks.

Ironically, Field, 74, (also gay) hosted and designed the outfits for a fashion event in 2012 in New York City, and it featured many women wearing pantyhose.

Meryl Streep, left, and Anne Hathaway during a scene from the movie,
Meryl Streep, left, and Anne Hathaway during a scene from the movie, “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Similarly, Field designed the costumes for the TV series, “Ugly Betty” (2006-2010) and the movie, “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006), both of which featured its stars wearing pantyhose.

So, while Field obviously has something personal against pantyhose, she at least hasn’t shut them out of the wardrobes of all movies and events.

In looking at images of Field online, I didn’t see a single picture of her wearing pantyhose herself (thank God for that, actually).

However, I did see a picture of Lucy Liu attending Field’s 2009 birthday party, in which (of course, Field was bear-legged), yet, even Lucy Liu wore pantyhose.

Lucy Liu, left, celebrates costume designer Patricia Field's birthday Feb. 16, 2009 in New York City.
Actress Lucy Liu, celebrates costume designer Patricia Field’s birthday February  2009 in New York City.

That’s significant because Lucy Liu hardly ever wears pantyhose during public appearances.

So, indeed, the Grizzly has a couple of candidates for new clients, but SJP no longer should be considered one of them.

And, it’s appearing more and more obvious that the next Grizzly Award should go to Bushnell or Field, or both.

Now, is SJP still going to disappoint us by showing up bear-legged on talk shows, at movie premieres, public appearances and even while she’s just out and about?

Yeah, more than likely.  OK, definitely.

Then again, there isn’t a single celebrity, even the ones who can be considered devoted pantyhose wearers, who don’t do that at one time or another.

Sad GrizzlyIn any case, Sarah Jessica Parker wears pantyhose of her own volition, and frequently enough that she no longer should be considered the ambassador of the bear-legs culture.  Certainly, she’s not the cause of it.

And while this saddens the Grizzly, the bottom line is I was the one who blamed SJP for the bear-legs movement, I was wrong, and so I’ve corrected the mistake.

Welcome to the good side, SJP.

Sorry, Grizz.

Note: My thanks to professional graphic artist David Joseph (whose wife, Sheri, is an ActSensuous customer) for his awesome artwork for this blog post.  I provided the ideas and the raw pictures, and David expertly turned my vision into reality.

David also designed the current ActSensuous website and the beautiful packaging for our Act IV pantyhose.

Note II: My thanks, also, to Mark Johnson, a professional graphic artist and a corporate attorney (and an ActSensuous fan) for the very first picture of the Grizzly in the John Cusack pose from the 1989 movie, “Say Anything.”

I first delivered (July 2014) the Cusack photo and a grizzly bear picture to Mark, along with my vision for this post.  It took some doing, but the resulting artwork (above) was the very key to my writing this post.

Thank you, Mark, wherever you are now.

Below, you’ll find more pictures of Sarah Jessica Parker wearing pantyhose throughout the past few decades, and at various venues.  Enjoy!

Conviction needed from celebrity pantyhose wearers

In the ongoing battle between pantyhose and “bear” legs, I’m no expert (wait a minute … yes, I am), but it seems these days we’re in a one step forward, one step back situation.

Lately, I’ve learned how to keep my blood pressure from spiking out of control:  I don’t watch movies or TV shows that I intuitively know are going to piss me off because the actresses who should be wearing pantyhose likely ain’t gonna be.

Case in point: I steered clear of last Sunday’s American Music Awards (AMA) show because I knew it would disappoint me.  However, I did DVR it so that I could later blow past stupid commercials and much of the ugliness that this freak show has become.

Note: Pitbull should never be a host.  He’s too much in love with himself, and other than singing, does he have any real talent? I think not.  Second, much of what they were calling entertainment doesn’t sound like music to me.  More like a train wreck maybe.

I actually worry that other countries will see the AMA show and wonder what happened to America?  With a few notable exceptions, looking at how the presenters, guests and performers dressed and conducted themselves, it appears that values, decency and class are disappearing from pop culture.  If what I glimpsed is any indication of what the future holds for this country, I’d prefer that the big meteor crash into Earth now, wiping out … oh, I don’t know … most of the population?

Naturally, I got what I expected out of the AMAs: Most of the female artists (including Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, both of whom I hoped wouldn’t disappoint me) wore beautiful gowns and fabulous heels, but no pantyhose.

Professional singer, dancer and actress Jennifer Lopez delivers a high-octane performance during the 2014 AMAs.
Professional singer, dancer and actress Jennifer Lopez delivers a high-octane performance during the 2014 AMAs.

Only the two I thought would — Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande — wore pantyhose.  (OK, and so did Iggy Azalea during her performance with J-Lo, so I give her credit “wear” credit is due).

DISCLAIMER: Again, I didn’t actually watch the AMA show, but instead fast-forwarded at 4-speed on the DVR remote, stopping only when something promising-looking caught my eye.  Thus, if I missed a female presenter or performer who actually was wearing pantyhose, feel free to correct me in your comments.  And, if I diss one of your favorite stars just because she was bear-legged, hey, this is a pantyhose blog.  It’s what I do!

J-Lo always delivers a high-energy, exciting performance, and the vast majority of the time, she shows professionalism and class in wearing pantyhose with her outfits on stage.  For those reasons, I am always interested in seeing her perform.

Always professional and classy, singer/actor Ariana Grande dazzled during the AMAs.
Always professional and classy, singer/actor Ariana Grande dazzled during the AMAs.

But the artist who stole the show (for me, anyway) was Ariana Grande.  Amazing that it’s just about the youngest performer out there who consistently is the most professional and classiest of them all.  I love this girl.  Now, I have to say her voice makes me want to pull my hair out, and I can’t understand 90 percent of her lyrics (which, actually, might be a good thing), but I am extremely impressed with Ariana for sticking to her core values (or, at least, her good taste), always wearing cute outfits, high heels and her signature suntan sheer pantyhose.

During the AMA show performance, Ariana was part of a threesome that included Jessie J and Nicki Minaj.  Jessie J usually is very pantyhose-friendly, but she didn’t wear for this number, and neither did Minaj.  I know nothing about Minaj, so I have no idea whether she typically wears or doesn’t.

But I know this: Jessie J and Nicki Minaj might want to rethink the idea of performing alongside Ariana because they looked awful next to her.  I think, anyway.

From left, Jessie J, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande perform a number together during the AMAs.
From left, Jessie J, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande perform a number together during the AMAs.

My eyes were glued on Ariana only, and I suspect that also was the case among most men watching the performance.  Ariana is tiny next to Jessie J and Nicki Minaj, but with her professionalism and class, she stood (figuratively) 10 feet taller than them.

Think I am overdoing it with my praise for Ariana?  Here’s the thing:  If pantyhose are going to win the battle against the bear-legs crowd, we need a superstar celeb who consistently wears pantyhose on stage, to awards shows, as a guest on television specials, and even just out-and-about.  Ariana has showed many times that she is a devoted wearer.

Actress/singer Selena Gomez is one of the more devoted pantyhose wearers, even out-and-about.
Actress/singer Selena Gomez is one of the more devoted pantyhose wearers, even out-and-about.

Taylor Swift appears to be 50-50 at best.  In pantyhose, she looks awesome, but she’s not consistent in wearing during concert performances or anywhere else.  Of course, she does sometimes and looks great in those cases, but then she arbitrarily shows up on the biggest entertainment stages bear-legged.

On the other hand, Selena Gomez is far more consistent in wearing pantyhose for all the right occasions and venues.  Selena might be a close second to Ariana as a dedicated pantyhose wearer, including when she’s just out and about.  And, like Ariana, when Selena wears, she looks stunningly beautiful.

Of course, longtime readers here know that I’ve praised Katy Perry big-time in this blog.  Yet, too many times, I’ve seen photos of Katy on stage and off in bear legs.  I still love Katy, but she’s just not as consistent a wearer as Ariana.

Consistently wearing beautiful outfits, complete with her signature sheer pantyhose, Ariana Grande always delivers an exciting show.
Consistently wearing beautiful outfits, complete with her signature sheer pantyhose, Ariana Grande always delivers an exciting show.

Let me tell you something: Ariana is the real deal.  She might be the one performer who truly sets a good (and right) example for her legions of adoring young fans.  When those girls become 17, 18 and older, they might be more likely to wear pantyhose to emulate their idol.

Besides Ariana, is there a celebrity we could describe as a truly consistent pantyhose wearer? If there is one, it’s Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.  Pantyhose sales throughout the UK and to some extent, the U.S., already are thriving again thanks to her.  Kate should win the Nobel Peace prize for that.

Actress Sofia Vergara almost always wears pantyhose for all the right reasons.
Actress Sofia Vergara almost always wears pantyhose for all the right reasons.

Certainly, Zoey Deschanel has demonstrated she is a devoted pantyhose wearer.  I’m sure she has appeared bear-legged once or twice on TV shows, movies or at public appearances, but in those cases, I’d have to believe the venue called for a more casual look.  Otherwise, Zoey must be one of the most dedicated and consistent pantyhose wearers anywhere.

How about Sofia Vergara?  It seems she’s everywhere now, pitching airlines, clothes, cosmetics, furniture, soft drinks.  Most often, she wears sheer black pantyhose.

The other day, I saw her in a TV commercial for Rooms ToGo, and it looked as if she were wearing nude pantyhose, but the few pictures of that ad I could find online weren’t of a high enough resolution, and she looked to be (gasp) bear-legged.

Sofia, a consistent pantyhose wearer?  You’d have to say yes, but I couldn’t believe the number of pics I found of her in bear legs during publicity appearances.

One step forward, one step back

Seems we have a long way to go still.  You can look on the Internet and find millions of pictures of celebrities and real women wearing pantyhose.  There are so many, I sometimes wonder how the bear-legs culture is still around.

Usually more classy, Taylor Swift inexplicably goes bare-legged in an elegant evening gown, which gave way to a sexy little number even for a formal set on stage at the AMAs.
Taylor Swift inexplicably goes bare-legged in an elegant evening gown (which gave way to a sexy little slip or something).  Those bare legs look awful with her outfit and the otherwise formal set during her performance at the AMAs.

But then on the world’s biggest stages, including the AMA show, presumably, the grandest show of the year for celebrities in the music industry, Taylor Swift and the overwhelming majority of women show up bear-legged.  Why is that?  I think it’s because today too many celebs still have a bear-legs consciousness.  When the movement dawned during the late 1990s to early 2000s, the concept of bears legs was a bit shocking, but soon enough women from all walks of life jumped on the bandwagon.  Once the excuse to not wear pantyhose was out there, it quickly took roots among almost all women.

Of course, it’s pretty clear now that pantyhose are making a big comeback.  Nothing in the fashion world lasts forever.  What’s hot turns cold, and what’s cold eventually turns hot.  I have every confidence that pantyhose will some day be the preferred look again.  We can see evidence of that everywhere we look.  But, as long as there is some measure of doubt about what’s “in” today, we’ll see inconsistency among even those celebs we would view as devoted wearers.  Many of them just don’t have the conviction yet, and so they aren’t sure which way to go.  And, not wanting to appear out of touch, it seems that they choose the lesser course to be safe.

While that is frustrating, I still find this to be an exciting time.  When a celebrity shows up at an event wearing pantyhose, it’s a thrill.  Now, it’s like the celebs who wear are the cool ones since everyone else is doing the same old bear-legs thing.  The ones who wear today are like the first ones to not wear.  They are now challenging what became the norm just a decade or so ago.  That will cause a stir and create doubt the other way — that perhaps women should be wearing pantyhose today.

A treat when pantyhose show up unexpectedly

That was the headline of my post (May 16, 2011) that featured South Korean model and actress Jun Ji-hyun, starring in the movie, “Blood: The Last Vampire?”  I was reminded of that headline this past Sunday, when I watched “Talking Dead,” the post-show to AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” in which host Chris Hardwick and a few guests analyze that night’s preceding episode.  Usually, the guests (often at least one from the cast of TWD) don’t exactly dress up, and lately, I’ve been skipping the post-show.  But as that night’s episode of TWD was ending, the network flashed a quick peak at what was to come on TD and I caught a glimpse of a guest wearing what I thought might be sheer nude pantyhose.

So I tuned in and was thrilled to see Christian Serratos (who plays Rosita Espinoza) wearing a little black dress, black heels and, indeed, sheer nude pantyhose.

“The Walking Dead” actresses Christian Serratos (Rosita), center, and Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha), right, and comedian, actor and writer Paul F. Tompkins discuss last Sunday’s episode with “Talking Dead” host Chris Hardwick, not shown.

And, wow, did she look incredibly gorgeous.  I like her character, Rosita, but I had no idea who the actress is because I had never seen her in anything other than TWD.  I’ve since learned she is, (or was maybe) on “Twilight.”  I don’t really know because I’ve never seen a single episode of that TV series (or is it a movie, or movies?).  Obviously, I don’t have anything against vampires.  I just don’t care for the whole young romance theme, which Twilight appears to be about from scenes I’ve noticed during promotions.

Christian Serratos (Rosita Espinoza on
Christian Serratos (Rosita Espinoza on “The Walking Dead”) plays a feminine but capable survivor of the zombie apocalypse.

Anyway, Christian Serratos is petite (like me) and, as Rosita on TWD, she’s the most feminine of the female characters, her signature outfit being shorts and a cropped shirt that exposes her midriff.  Naturally, in the wasteland that has become the zombie apocalypse, we don’t expect to see a woman in pantyhose (with the exception of fabulous Milla Jovovich as Alice in the awesome “Resident Evil” movies), and I always wondered why the female cast members of the show wouldn’t want to appear on the post-show dressed all girly for a change.

Wouldn’t they want their audience to finally see a different (more elegant) side of them?  Many of the actresses do dress up on TD, but they never wear pantyhose, but now that Christian did, she is my new girl crush.

Actress Christian Serratos appears in a sexy outfit, complete with beautiful pantyhose during a recent advertisement for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

Of course, I Googled her to see if she’s really a pantyhose kind of girl, or if this appearance on TD was a total aberration.  I found only a few pics of her in pantyhose, but that’s OK.  To me, it actually makes it even more meaningful that she viewed the occasion of being on TD significant enough to dress beautifully, including wearing sheer nude pantyhose.

Does it seem to you that when a woman today actually does wear pantyhose with a black dress and black heels, it’s almost always black hose?  Of course I get it (what we’ve always been taught), but I wish women today didn’t think it’s mandatory to match the shade of hosiery with the color of their shoes.  Nude pantyhose are such a beautiful look with a black ensemble (and all other colors really.)  So I love Christian Serratos all the more for her good taste in wearing sheer nude pantyhose to go along with her class and elegance.

In all fairness, in looking for the photo of Christian Serratos from TD, I found that there actually was at least one other female star from TWD, Lauren Cohan, who also appeared on the post-show wearing a skirt and pantyhose.

“The Walking Dead” executive producer Robert Kirkman, left, Lauren Cohan (Maggie),
and Scott Wilson (Hershel) appeared last season with Chris Hardwick, host of “Talking Dead.”

Like Christian, Lauren (who plays prominent character, Maggie) is very feminine in real life.  I don’t know any other works she’s done, but in searching the Internet for pics of her in pantyhose, I could find only one, other than the few from her appearance on TD.

That’s really too bad because she is a beautiful girl and has spectacular legs.

Another unexpected treat

I’d never watched the TV series, “Person of Interest,” but not for any reason other than that it just didn’t occur to me to do so.  I don’t know at what point it was, but I saw during scenes for an upcoming episode that actress Sarah Shahi had been added to the cast.  That got me interested in POI, and I watched an episode or two and liked all the characters, although I am so late coming to the series I really don’t understand much about what’s going on.

For someone who looks this amazing wearing pantyhose, Sarah Shahi, sadly, hardly ever does.
For someone who looks this amazing wearing pantyhose, sadly, actress Sarah Shahi, hardly ever does.

I’ve had a love-hate (mostly hate) relationship with Sarah Shahi because, while I thought she was great in the old “Life” TV series, in her role as a detective, she was always dressed in pants.

Later, when she starred in “Fairly Legal,” I figured that was a role in which it would be appropriate for her to wear pantyhose, but nooooooooo.  She went bear-legged.  (Hated it.  Didn’t watch it.)

I had seen on the Internet the same (like, 3) whole pics you’ve seen of Sarah Shahi in pantyhose (always black), so I was glad to see that she at least knows what pantyhose are.  And, oh my gosh, does she look gorgeous in them.  But I’d given up any hope of seeing this talented beauty ever wear them on a TV show or movie.

Sarah Shahi often wears a black dress and heels, with her usual bare legs as the character, Sameen Shaw, on the CBS drama, “Person of Interest.”

And, as expected, I found that on POI Sarah’s character (Sameen Shaw) wears mostly all black pants outfits as, I guess, one of the muscles on the team.  Otherwise, she wears a black dress and black heels, but, sadly, she’s always bear-legged.

Still, I’d become intrigued with POI, and I was ready for the new season (4) which started Sept. 3.  I recorded the premiere episode, but didn’t actually watch it until recently.

The show opens with a female blonde character (she’s a bad guy) in a black dress and heels (bear-legged) who meets a journalist in a bar, and murders him because he’s on to something about Artificial Intelligence about to take over life as we know it.

Subsequently (still in the first few minutes of the show), the scene changes to a fashion department store, the camera fixed on a pair of beautiful sheer nude pantyhose-adorned feet and legs in black heels and a black dress, and as the camera slowly pans upward, I am thinking to myself, please let that be Sarah Shahi’s character, Miss Shaw.  And, to my sheer delight, it is.

http://personofinterestfans.com/person-of-interest-panopticon-sneak-peek-3/

I could hardly believe it.  Finally, I am seeing Sarah Shahi in a little black dress with black high heels and sheer pantyhose.  And not black pantyhose, but sheer nude pantyhose.  And she looks spectacular.

Of course I am hoping this is a sign of things to come — that we’ll see more of Miss Shaw in sheer nude pantyhose.  I also like that the show sticks to some sense of realism, in that the Shaw character, working as a sales associate (as a cover) in a big upscale department store (such as Macy’s) indeed would be expected to wear a dress, heels and pantyhose.

Not amused at working in a department store as part of her new cover ID, Sameen Shah (Sarah Shahi) approaches a team member who came up with the role for her.
Not amused at having to work in a department store as part of her new cover ID, Sameen Shaw (Sarah Shahi) approaches a team member who came up with the role for her.

After watching that episode, I tried to find that awesome picture of Miss Shaw (bored and feeling the assignment was beneath her), standing in an aisle of the store offering customers a sample of perfume.  Unfortunately, it was nowhere to be found, however, I got one (above) that shows just enough of her legs to see that she’s wearing.  And, of course, I did find the premiere teaser video for your viewing pleasure.  (You’re welcome.)

Like me, do you ever wonder how some photos from TV and movie scenes make it to the Internet, and some (the best ones) don’t?  And if only you or I were in charge, we’d make sure that priceless gems such as this one of Sarah Shahi in sheer nude pantyhose would definitely make it?  It’s like, who’s in charge of these things?  Doesn’t he or she know the significance of such a shot?

Not since Lucy Liu wore sheer nude pantyhose in one or two episodes of “Elementary” last season, have I been this excited about a character in one of the TV shows I follow, but I have a feeling we won’t be seeing Miss Shaw in sheer pantyhose again, any more often than we’ve since seen Joan Watson in them.

One step forward-one step back.  Still, it’s “A treat when pantyhose show up unexpectedly,” and until our favorite celebs become more consistent in choosing this look we love, we can, at least, savor the next surprise.

Rare occurrence for pantyhose lovers about to take place

Sept. 25, 2013

Update

OK, well, that was rather anti-climatic.  Not only were there very few scenes of Lucy Liu wearing sheer nude pantyhose during tonight’s Season 2 premiere episode of Elementary, but no real great camera views.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t change the fact that Lucy Liu actually did wear sheer nude pantyhose for (the first time ever on the show?), and at least we have the still shots to enjoy what we didn’t get to see enough of during the actual episode.

Original post — Tuesday Sept. 24, 2013:

I know that at least some of you are like me (so sorry for that) in that you make decisions about which movies or TV shows you watch based on the likelihood of the female lead character wearing pantyhose.

Lucy Liu on the set of
Actress Lucy Liu on the set of Elementary Aug. 21, 2012 in New York.

Being a huge Lucy Liu fan, I have tried to watch the CBS reimagined Sherlock Holmes TV drama series, Elementary, in which she plays Dr. Joan Watson — a sober companion-turned-apprentice-detective to Holmes.

While I love Lucy Liu and think she’s a fine actress, I haven’t been able to stick with Elementary for two reasons:

First, she has too much of a backseat role for my liking; Second, I don’t care for her wardrobe (usually, some fluffy skirt, with ankle booties and thick, dark tights; sometimes, slightly not as thick and lighter-colored tights, but always the tights).  Tights! Tights!  Always, the tights.

This also appears to be Lucy Liu’s preferred real-life look — or worse, not with the tights even, as she all-too-often does the “bear” legs thing.

That’s a shame because when she occasionally dresses elegantly, and when she extremely rarely wears sheer pantyhose, Lucy Liu looks absolutely spectacular.

Sheer miracle

Now, something earth-shattering is about to happen.  In this Thursday’s (Sept. 26) Season 2, Episode 1 premiere of Elementary at 10 p.m. on CBS, Dr. Watson is going to be wearing a fluffy dress, those goofy ankle booties and … wait for it … SHEER NUDE PANTYHOSE.

In the episode, “Step Nine:” Holmes and Watson travel to London to help a former mentor of Holmes’ investigate an unsolved mystery.

Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson appears on the set of Elementary in London, wearing sheer nude pantyhose.

Now, since the show is on Thursday, I don’t know the details, but I was fortunate enough to find some pics from the scenes, which were shot last month.  It’s a bit confusing because Watson is wearing two similar-looking outfits, one in New York, where the show is set, and the other during  the London scenes.

LL Elem 3

LL Elem 4

During the scenes shot in NY, Watson is “bear”-legged, but while in London, she wears sheer nude pantyhose.   Hmmmmm.

Two things here:  First, most of the outfits Watson wears at least include tights, so why she appears out in the streets of NY in bear legs actually surprises me; Second, the fact that she wears pantyhose while in London is very interesting.

Is this a sign of respect directed toward Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, while on Kate’s turf?

After all, it was Kate Middleton who almost single-handedly brought back, not only pantyhose, but more specifically, sheer nude or suntan pantyhose, to mostly the whole world.  (Thanks again for that, Kate.)

And if this is a sign of respect, was it the decision of the costume designer of Elementary, or was it Lucy Liu’s decision or suggestion herself?

Either way, I’m happy, but I’d like to think that Lucy Liu wanted to wear sheer nude pantyhose.

Again, since we won’t see the show until Thursday, I don’t know how the bear legs outfit and the sheer nude pantyhose outfit are worn during the same episode.

It sounds as if the show begins with Holmes and Watson traveling to London, so I don’t know whether the NY scenes come up first, or if it is after the characters’ return home, or perhaps, the NY scenes are in the following week.

Either way, it appears that the photos from both NY and London were shot around the same time last month.  Well, we’ll see, but the thing that is particularly significant here is that this episode, or episodes will serve as a wonderful compare/contrast deal.

To actually have the opportunity of the whole Elementary-viewing public to see for themselves and compare/contrast Watson’s bear legs with pantyhose-adorned legs in one episode (or two), is fantastic.

LL Elem 5
Lucy Liu’s bare legs on the set of Elementary last month in New York. And what a tremendous difference there is.
When I wrote earlier that I want it to have been Lucy Liu’s decision that she wear pantyhose for the London scenes, it’s because I hope that she didn’t care much for the way her legs look in the NY scenes.  Do you realize the significance of that?

How many times have you read my words on this blog, expressing my dismay at how a celebrity could see herself on camera after going bear-legged and not say to herself afterward: “What was I thinking?”

Whether that happened in Lucy Liu’s case or not, Elementary has just gotten a great deal more interesting and appealing to me.

OK, I feel some of you slipping away.   What’s the big deal whether she wears pantyhose or not, you ask?

Listen, I love Lucy Liu.  I think she is an incredibly beautiful lady.   And I think she’s beautiful whether she’s wearing pantyhose or not.

LL baton 1But look at this picture (right) from Thursday night’s episode. Lucy Liu as Dr. Watson is heading to a confrontation with a suspected bad guy.

Check out those legs.

I adore Lucy Liu, and I think she’s got some world-class legs.

But, after seeing this picture of herself, do you really believe Lucy Liu would be happy with how she looked in this short a skirt … and bear legs?

It doesn’t mean she’s not still beautiful.  It doesn’t mean she isn’t a wonderful actress and a great person.

LL on setBut being honest, you have to admit her legs look a great deal more spectacular in this picture (left) from the same episode … only in sheer nude pantyhose.

So for those who wonder why it matters, this is why:  Do you think Lucy Liu would go without makeup during a TV episode or a movie?

I doubt it.  She’s a superstar.  She’s always going to present herself in the best possible light.

And, just as makeup can improve every actor’s face, sheer pantyhose can enhance the beauty of every girl’s legs.

I’m not saying Lucy Liu should never go bear-legged.  I am saying that when she wears sheer nude (or any skin tone shade) pantyhose, she goes from beautiful to incredibly amazing.  That’s all.

Make a difference

Now, here’s where you come in.  Here’s your homework assignment.  Whether you’re a Lucy Liu fan or not; whether you like Elementary or not, you should tune in Thursday at 10 p.m. on CBS and watch this episode.

Let’s make the ratings skyrocket at least for this episode.  Will that make a difference?  Would anyone associated with the show realize that people watched because Dr. Watson finally wears sheer nude pantyhose on Elementary?  Probably not, but it couldn’t hurt.

Maybe those of you who are Internet savvy will write in to the show, lauding Lucy Liu’s and/or the costume designer’s decision to dress Watson this way.

If nothing else, the sharp contrast between Lucy Liu’s bear legs and pantyhose-graced legs will be permanently preserved on film print for critical scrutiny.  If anyone really cares.  I do, and I know you do, too.

ActS pollIn one of my polls: “Which Asian actress do you most want to see wearing pantyhose?” you chose Lucy Liu by a significant margin.

As of this writing, of the 45 votes you cast, 17 were for Lucy Liu (38%).  The next highest vote-getters were Tia Carrere with 10 (22%), followed by Zhang Ziyi (my personal favorite) with 9 (20%).  And the field included some other very impressive candidates.

Actually, I’m shocked that Gong Li got no votes.  She looks amazing in pantyhose, but sadly, you won’t find many pics of her in them.  One exception is in her role in the “Miami Vice” movie.

In any event, at least for one episode of Elementary, we get to see Lucy Liu in sheer nude pantyhose, and suddenly, all seems right in the world.  I hope it leads to many more episodes in which she dresses this way.

Happy New Year to our Chinese and other Asian friends

To our many Chinese customers, readers and my friends, Xie-Xie Ni for your loyalty to ActSensuous.

And to our Japanese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese customers, and all our Asian friends who celebrate the Chinese New Year, ActSensuous wishes you much happiness, good health, prosperity and love in 2013, and always.

And now, in alphabetical order by how they’re most known (some by first name, others by last name):

Ann Curry:  You are amazing.  In addition to being a great journalist, you are classy, elegant and beautiful.  Thank you for always having the professionalism and sense of femininity to always wear sheer pantyhose.

Bai Ling:  You are an incredible actress, but you have become too Hollywierd and don’t choose the best roles.  You are unusually beautiful, but never moreso than when you wear a nice dress, pretty high heels and sheer pantyhose.  Thank you for the few times you do.  More than anyone else, you don’t let anyone or any movement determine what you wear.  I love it when you dress elegantly, especially when you wear sheer pantyhose.  But please, less sheer black, and more nude or suntan.

Gong Li was never more beautiful than in her role in the movie, "Miami Vice," wear she wore elegant suits and sheer nude pantyhose.
Gong Li was never more beautiful than in her role in the movie, “Miami Vice,” where throughout most of the film, she wore elegant suits and sheer nude pantyhose.

Gong Li:  You are devastatingly beautiful. You have the face of an angel from heaven.  And you have great legs and the most gorgeous feet in the whole world.  You are very strong-minded and strong-willed.  Please don’t follow a fashion trend. You always dress elegantly.  Just please wear sheer nude pantyhose more often. The few times you do, you rule the universe.

Jeon Ji-hyeon:  Loved you in “Blood, the Last Vampire” and “My Sassy Girl” and “Snowflower and the Secret Fan.”   You are incredibly beautiful.  You are one of the few young models/actresses out there who frequently wears beautiful outfits, including sheer pantyhose.  Thank you, and please continue to live up to the reputation Asian women have for carrying themselves with poise, class, grace and ultra femininity.

Joan Chen:  Wear have you been?  You are an awesome actress, and you are stunningly beautiful.  I’ve never seen you in a movie (other than a period piece) in which you didn’t wear sheer nude pantyhose when wearing a dress.  Yet, I can find only about six pictures of you in pantyhose. Someone as feminine and glamorous as you should live in a dress, high heels and sheer pantyhose.  Please, Joan.

Chinese actress, singer and model Karen Mok is a devoted pantyhose wearer.

Karen Mok:  You are the coolest of them all.  You are gorgeous, but you’re also just plain cute.  And you are known for your killer legs.  And you are appreciated by those in the know for being one of the few who always can be depended on to wear sheer pantyhose for all the right occasions and venues.

As adorable as you are, you have so much class.  You’re also very intelligent.  I think you speak five languages, you are a singer, dancer, model, actress, and now a wife.  Congratulations.  And really, I cannot thank you enough for your devotion to wearing sheer pantyhose.  You are amazing.  Please don’t ever change.

Kelly Hu, what in the world?  I’ve seen you in sheer pantyhose I think once.  You are gorgeous.  What are you thinking?  Please give the world the gift of seeing you in a dress, high heels and sheer nude pantyhose.  Oh my goodness, you’d be a total knockout.

Lucy Liu, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t adore you, but please lose those ugly think black tights and go back to wearing nude or suntan sheer pantyhose.  You really look incredible in them.  In a poll on this blog, “Which Asian actress do you most want to see in pantyhose?”, you are far and away the Number One choice.  When I see rare pics of you in sheer nude pantyhose, I shake my head in wonder at how anyone who looks that beautiful in them would ever choose not to wear them as often as you do.

Chinese actress Maggie Cheung always could be counted on to wear sheer pantyhose in her many movies and ads.
Chinese actress Maggie Cheung always could be counted on to wear sheer pantyhose in her many movies and ads.

Maggie Cheung:  Where, oh, where have you been, Maggie?  Back in the day, no one had more incredibly beautiful legs than you.  And you always wore sheer pantyhose.  In the Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh movie, “SuperCop” you played a tour guide and when you stepped off the bus in that short skirt, high heels and sheer nude pantyhose, I thought you were a total goddess.  Even today, in the rare pictures I see of you, you’re usually wearing pantyhose.  So, thank you, Maggie.  I’d just like to see you more often.

Maggie Q:  How adorable you are.  You are super talented.  You are becoming a great actress, yet, you maintain a sweet and genuine quality. Good for you.  I thought I was never going to see you in sheer pantyhose, but all of a sudden, during this season of “Nikita,” you are wearing them much more often, and looking great.  Thank you for that.

Michelle Yeoh:  You are still my favorite.  I think Zhang Ziyi is the most gorgeous woman in the world, but to me, you are the most beautiful woman in the world.  The difference?  To me, beautiful means so much more than just physical beauty.  You are so professional, so classy, so caring, so devoted to good causes.  You are a kind and good person.  But, Michelle, you have never been more lovely in your whole life than when you wear sheer nude pantyhose.  Lately, you’ve been doing the “bear”-legs thing during public appearances.

Malyasian actress and humanitarian Michelle Yeoh is considered by moviemakers to be the most professional in the business.
Malyasian actress and humanitarian Michelle Yeoh is considered by moviemakers to be the most professional in the business.

I once read a comment you made in a magazine interview about Asian women having surgery to change their single-eyelid, and you admonished them, saying something to the effect of “Don’t change your appearance to meet Western standards of beauty.”  I was so happy you said that.  I think the single-eyelid is one of the things that makes Asian women so beautiful.  But, Michelle, you have been following the fashion trend started by Western women of going “bear”-legged.  You are way too professional and have way too much class and elegance to allow yourself to dress the way these Hollywierd celebrities do.

Please, Michelle, do what you know is right — dress those lovely legs of yours in sheer pantyhose, the way you did many times during premiere or publicity events for “The Lady.”  You must have felt the occasion called for a more formal look, and you made the right decision in wearing pantyhose.  And you looked incredible.  Please dress this way more often. You are the most visible Asian actress in the world.  Asian women are known for dressing more elegantly and femininely than Western women. You are the perfect role model for all Asian women.  You could set such a good example for all the other Asian celebrities.  Please do that, Michellle.

The few times Korean actress Sandra Oh wears an elegant outfit with sheer pantyhose, she is among the most beautiful Asian stars.
The few times Korean actress Sandra Oh wears an elegant outfit with sheer pantyhose, she is among the most beautiful Asian stars.

Sandra Oh:  The same goes for you.  You can do the slob routine as well as the typical Westerner.  But you just as often wear some fantastic dresses and awesome shoes.

And here’s something many people probably don’t realize — you have gorgeous feet.  But it is so rare (if ever these days) to see you in sheer nude or suntan pantyhose.

You really should go back and look at the pictures of you in that TV series you starred in, ‘Arliss,” about the sports agent, your movies “Last Night,” Double Happiness” and “Bean.”

How can someone who looks as incredible as you do in sheer pantyhose opt to go bare-legged, or almost worse, wear those thick black ugly tights.  Yuk.  You have great legs, Sandra.  They’ve never looked better than in sheer pantyhose.

Shu Qi:  You made a movie titled “Gorgeous,” and you are.  And you’re the cutest Asian actress ever.  More than most others, you are a frequent wearer of sheer pantyhose and you look incredible when you do.

For a good portion of the movie, "The Transporter," Chinese actress/model Shu Qi wore a lovely outfit with sheer nude pantyhose.

You were never more lovely and adorable than in “The Transporter.”  Here’s what petite women don’t seem to understand: Nothing looks better on you than a short skirt and high heels.  And, in “The Transporter,” that’s what you wore, with very sheer nude pantyhose.  Your legs never looked prettier.  Thank you, Shu Qi.  You are awesome.

Tia Carrere:  What happened to you?  You have disappeared.  I don’t know what you’re up to, and in the few pics I’ve seen of you, you’re doing the “bear”-legged thing.  I don’t know why because in your day, every movie I saw you in, you were wearing a dress, high heels and sheer nude or suntan pantyhose.  And, oh my gosh, did you have incredible legs.  You had to know that those pantyhose made your legs.  Yet, today, you’ve turned your back on them.  I don’t know why.  But thank you for how incredible you looked in pantyhose, particularly in “Wayne’s World,” High School High,” and “True Lies.”

Korean actress/singer Uhm Jung-hwa was deadly but delicious in sheer pantyhose in "Princess Aurora."

Uhm Jung-hwa:  You broke my heart in “Princess Aurora.”  What a beautiful, sad and powerful movie.  And what an amazing acting job, Jung-hwa.  I became a fan for life.  I know you also are an awesome model and singer/stage performer in Korea.

I know you always wear sexy outfits, including sparkly tights or sheer pantyhose during your performances. But it’s the look you portray in your movies that make me a fan. I’ve tried to buy all your movies on DVD, but only a handful are available to the U.S.  I’ve got four so far, but for me, “Princess Aurora” will always be the one that defines you.  You looked stunningly beautiful in that role, and I love that you wore sheer nude pantyhose throughout the movie, including during the fight scene with that lawyer.  Wow. Thank you for your commitment to femininity.  Still, I wish you were a more frequent pantyhose wearer when making public appearances.  I just hope you realize that, as beautiful as you look in everything you wear, you look twice as amazing in pantyhose.

Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, speaking during a media event last year in Toronto, routinely dresses professionally and beautifully, including wearing sheer pantyhose.

Zhang Ziyi:  Fittingly, your name allows me to save the best for last. I think you are the most gorgeous woman who has ever walked the planet. From head to toe, you are perfect.  In your movies, you are exciting, thrilling, powerful, beautiful, cute and funny.  You are amazing.  Of course, most of the movies you’ve made are kung fu period pieces, so no pantyhose.  But among all the other fabulous qualities you possess, I respect, admire and greatly appreciate you for being extremely professional, classy, glamourous and the very definition of feminine.  No one is more feminine than you.

And thank you, ZZ, for more often than not wearing sheer pantyhose when you make public appearances.  I’ll say this though:  If anyone could get away with NOT wearing pantyhose, it’s you.  You look incredible even bare-legged (no “bear” description for you.)  Still, when you do wear pantyhose, you are breathtakingly beautiful, and extremely sexy.  Also, while I said Gong Li has the most gorgeous feet of anyone, your’s are right there, too.  So please realize that nothing makes pretty feet look even prettier than sheer nylons. Thank you, Ziyi, for being such a perfect example for women everywhere.  You are the best ever and my hero.

Of course, there are many other Asian celebrities I could have mentioned, but this blog post would have gotten too long if I thanked each one individually.

Likewise, I know that there are a million Asian everyday women out there who go to work, go shopping, go to school, go to the grocery store, or just hang out — almost always wearing pantyhose.  I’ve heard that many Japanese housewives in particular wear pantyhose.  Now that is the ultimate commitment to beauty, grace and femininity.

My thanks to Asian women all over the world because it is common knowledge that you are more devoted pantyhose wearers than women of all other nationalities.

To all of you, Happy Chinese New Year 2013.

It broke my heart that you didn’t win the Australian Open last month.  I rooted and cheered during every shot you made, and I will be there for you during the upcoming French Open, hoping you can repeat as the 2011 champion there, Wimbledom and the U.S. Open.

I hope you win them all, but whether you do or not, you are nothing but a winner in life.

2011 a Great Year for Pantyhose

Robin Maryland, president, ActSensuous

If the “bear” legs movement won the decade of the new millennium, pantyhose certainly got their legs back in 2011.

(NOTE: I’m putting quotes around “bear” just once and then running with it as-is. Seasoned readers get my play on words, which have their origin in one of my earlier posts: “Why Bears Don’t Wear Pantyhose.”)

No, I’m not proclaiming that everything’s back to normal; far from it. But I think greater strides were made in 2011 than at any time from 2000 on.

I do think 2011 gave us much for which to be thankful, and optimism for years to come. While things looked pretty bleak from 2000 through 2010, I am thrilled by the number of new and seasoned celebrities we saw wearing pantyhose in 2011.

In movies, on TV shows, in TV commercials, on singers/performers taking the stage, on game shows, across fashion runways, in magazines, and practically everywhere we looked in the community, we saw more pantyhose in 2011 than I think we saw in the previous 10 years. And if you want to see beautiful women in pantyhose, just do a google search, and you’ll find that pantyhose are indeed alive and well.

Pantyhose took us by storm in the late-1960s, absolutely ruled in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and enjoyed a good run through most of the ‘90s before “Sex and the City” reared its ugly head in 1998.

In the role that made her famous, actress Catherine Bach as Daisy Duke on the TV show, “The Dukes of Hazzard,” made sheer pantyhose famous.

And, in the ’70s, no one did more for pantyhose than actress Catherine Bach in her role as Daisy Duke on the TV show, “The Dukes of Hazzard.”  Bach took sheer pantyhose to icon status, wearing them with her signature short-shorts and heels on the show.

It’s difficult to imagine how and why so many women in the world would try so hard to distance themselves from the look made famous by Bach.

Looking at this picture of Catherine Bach, I can’t see how anyone could believe that pantyhose are old-fashioned and irrelevant in society today.  A look of sheer beauty and the truest sense of femininity is never irrelevant, and it never goes out of style.

I honestly didn’t believe the bear legs culture would catch on, and I never dreamed it would flourish, almost to the demise of pantyhose.

It has taken a great deal longer than I imagined, but women have begun coming to their senses again. That was clear in 2010, and never more evident than during 2011.

Still, through the darkest times of the 2000 decade, I was so pleased and encouraged by the vast number of men throughout the world voicing their displeasure over the bear legs movement. There are thousands of pantyhose forums, websites and blogs about the love and devotion that (at least) men feel for pantyhose.

I still can’t believe that so many women don’t seem to care that seemingly 99 percent of the male population loves them in pantyhose. The fact that women almost universally reject the beauty, femininity, class, elegance, and sensual characteristics inherent in pantyhose remains a complete mystery to me.

I should acknowledge that, along the way, there have been many women who never bought into the bear legs culture.  Occasionally, I read on an online forum about a woman or two who, like me, just don’t get the hostility other women have toward pantyhose.  It is so heartwarming and encouraging to read the words of some women who say they love pantyhose, and the attention and appreciation they get from wearing pantyhose for men who love it so much.  We can’t know about these everyday women on a large scale, so unfortunately, I cannot give them the praise they deserve. Still, we know they’re out there, so if you’re reading, thank you for remaining professional at the office, classy about town and always feminine in all situations.

Similarly, I’ve been delighted and encouraged by all the support from readers of The ActSensuous Blog this year. I greatly appreciate all your comments, compliments and well wishes.  So, in addition to my usual ranting and raving about celebs and the state of the pantyhose industry, in this year-in-review post, I want to share with you some things you might find interesting – the stuff you guys contribute.

Your comments

You guys write some well-conceived and thought-provoking comments.  You have a real understanding of what’s going on in the world of pantyhose.  You know the celebs who are devoted wearers, and you know the ones who aren’t.   In many of your comments, you attach links to pictures, videos and online articles about pantyhose.

I love it when you write about a colleague at work who routinely wears, or doesn’t.  I love when you write about your most memorable pantyhose experiences and the affects they had on you.

And, of course, I appreciate all the nice things you write about my different posts.  I couldn’t do this if I didn’t think you cared and appreciated it.  So thank you for all your support.

In case you ever wondered, most of those who comment on my blog are not ActSensuous customers.   Sometimes, it’s a bit embarrassing when a customer writes a comment and closes with how much he loves our products and our customer service.  I’m not asking for that, but it’s always nice to read the positive feedback, and I am sure it’s good for business.  So, to those customers/readers, I’ll say this:  That’s not what the blog is about, you don’t have to endorse us in your comments, but I know it comes from the heart, and I do appreciate very much your good intentions.

One reader complimented me a long time ago for keeping the blog separate from the business.  I never expected anyone to notice or care about that, but I always appreciated that this guy got it and pointed it out.  In fact, of the 48 (before this one) posts I’ve written since May 2009, only one was blatantly about ActSensuous – the one on April 25, 2011, called “Return of Pantyhose TV ads a Good Sign.”  In it, I shared my vision (OK, fantasy) of having a celebrity become the official spokesmodel for ActSensuous.  I wrote about the celebs I’d choose if I could.  That post was pretty popular and got some good comments, but I really thought it would get more response from you, telling me which celeb you thought would be perfect to represent ActSensuous.

And that leads me to this:

The polls

I thought polls would be a good way to be heard for those who don’t feel comfortable leaving a comment on a blog post.  What could be more anonymous than that?  Even I don’t know who clicks an answer on a poll on my blog. Yet, the response numbers seem low to me.

To those who have voted on my various polls, I thank you.  Your answers to the poll questions – your voice – give me an insight as to what you think about the state of pantyhose in society today.  To demonstrate that point, I’ll share with you the results of some of those polls, starting with:

  • “Which celebrity would be perfect to represent ActSensuous?”
Following her breakout role in the movie, “The Devil Wears Prada,” Anne Hathaway has maintained a classy and feminine look, including wearing pantyhose for all the right occasions and venues.

Of the 50 votes this poll generated, Anne Hathaway garnered 14 (30%).  To put that in perspective, the next highest vote-getter was Milla Jovovich with 9 (20%).

They beat out the likes of Sandra Bullock, Bai Ling, Nicole Kidman, and four write-in names: Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, Christie Brinkley and Morena Baccarin.

I was not surprised you chose Anne Hathaway.  I love that, even though she is so young, she gets it. While probably every celeb has her days when she just isn’t going to wear for any occasion, Anne is pretty consistent.  She has the maturity, the class and sense of femininity to wear for all the right reasons and at the right venues.  I believe Anne has a bright future as a Hollywood star, and I’d be proud to have her represent ActSensuous.

Of course I love Milla Jovovich.  She is beautiful, extremely professional, ultra classy and just plain cool.  She is a great actress, and if the truth were known, I’d choose her if I could.

Of the others, I love Bai Ling, Nicole Kidman, Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li, and I would be thrilled if any of them would even consider being the face (legs) of a pantyhose campaign, but that seems rather remote to me.

Christie Brinkley

Now, Christie Brinkley as the official spokesmodel for ActSensuous ….. that seems pretty realistic and very appealing to me.  I’ve always liked Christie.  She’s always been extremely professional, very classy and ultra feminine.

Those are some incredible legs, and she certainly understands the appeal of sheer pantyhose.

I would have thought the same thing about Morena Baccarin, but even though she can always be counted on to wear sheer pantyhose with her outfits in TV series (“The Visitors” and “Homeland”), I’ve never seen her wear during visits on late night talk shows.  I find that so frustrating because it kills my image of her.  I want to believe she is what I see in her TV roles, but have to face the reality that when she’s on her own time, she chooses not to wear.   That amazes me because she looks 100 times better in pantyhose.  Then again, isn’t that true of all of them?

  • Which Celebrity do you most want to see in pantyhose?”
Sandra Bullock performs a scene in her new movie, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” in Brooklyn.

This poll generated 91 votes, of which Sandra Bullock took 34 (37%).

She overwhelmed the likes of Jessica Alba with 22 votes (24%), Kate Beckinsale, Nicole Kidman, Bai Ling, and seven write-in answers, including Fran Drescher, Michelle Yeoh, Lucy Liu, Bette Middler, and Jenna Fisher.

Good for Sandra Bullock to win that poll.

It goes to show the popularity of the veteran action, dramatic and comedic actress among the ranks of pantyhose lovers.

Why not?  Sandra always has had the professionalism and class to wear pantyhose for the right occasions.

I would have liked to see Michelle Yeoh, Bai Ling and Lucy Liu score higher, but they do in the next poll.

  • Which Asian actress do you most want to see wearing pantyhose?”
The lovely and multi-talented Asian-American actress Lucy Liu sometimes wears pantyhose during public appearances, and when she does, she looks fabulous.

Out of 34 total votes (only 34 – what’s wrong with you people?), Lucy Liu won with 13 votes (38%).

Very impressive, as she beat out whom I think is the world’s most gorgeous woman, Zhang Ziyi, who came in second with 8 votes (24%).

This poll was won because of the popularity/familiarity of Lucy Liu.  I mean who doesn’t love her?

Ironically, from what I’ve observed, Ziyi is a much more prolific wearer of pantyhose than Lucy will ever be.

In fact, as much as I adore Lucy Liu, she breaks my heart by doing the bear legs thing much more often than wearing pantyhose.

Further, it seems the rare occasion on which we see Lucy Liu in pantyhose, she’s wearing the thick, black ones.  Yet, to behold her in sheer nude pantyhose is a breathtakingly beautiful sight. At least the black pantyhose she’s wearing in this photo are fairly sheer.

Zhang Ziyi (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” Rush Hour 2”) is only just becoming known to Western audiences, and since she lives in China, she’s not quite the household name Lucy Liu is.

Classy Chinese movie star Zhang Ziyi almost always wears pantyhose during public appearances.

But Ziyi is the Asian actress I most want to see in pantyhose.  To me, she is total perfection.

Other vote-getters in this poll were Tia Carrere, Michelle Yeoh, Devon Aoki, Bai Ling, Gong Li, Maggie Q, Karen Mok and Brenda Song.

Besides Zhang Ziyi, I next most want to see Michelle Yeoh in pantyhose.  I still love her more than any other Asian actress, and she is simply awesome in pantyhose, although, sadly, that’s a rare sight these days.

It’s so frustrating that Maggie Q doesn’t wear pantyhose on her hit show, “Nikita,” (or any other thing I’ve ever seen her in.)  There was a time (early 1990s) when Tia Carrere (“Wayne’s World,” “High School High,” “True Lies”) was the most beautiful thing that pantyhose ever happened to, but those days appear to be long gone.  I would guess most of you have no clue as to who Karen Mok is (“Black Mask” and “So Close”), but someday I’ll do a whole post about her.

Young model/actress Devon Aoki (“Debs” is my favorite movie of hers) is a frequent pantyhose wearer and looks amazing in them.   I haven’t seen enough of Brenda Song, but it’s neat that someone voted for her.

I love Gong Li, Maggie Cheung and Karen Mok, and they all look fabulous in pantyhose, but to me, there is just something truly remarkable about seeing Bai Ling in pantyhose. Maybe that’s because it’s so unexpected.

Bai Ling dressed beautifully, complete with brown pantyhose, during an appearance at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on Nov. 4, 2011, in Hollywood, Calif.

Bai Ling is an enigma.

She is extremely intelligent and has great talent.  She is incredibly beautiful.  But she fits in perfectly within the Hollyweird culture. I don’t really get her, but I can’t help but love her.

She is known for wearing the skimpiest and strangest outfits, and looking awesome in them.

But when she wears pantyhose, it is so heartwarming to me.  She kills me in a good way.

  • Pantyhose – To Wear or Not to Wear (ladies only please)

This was not the poll that saw the widest margin of victory, but the winning answer got 19 of the 24 votes (79%). The winner, I’m happy to say, is this answer:

“I choose to because I believe in and wholeheartedly support the concepts of beauty, glamour, class and sexiness inherent in pantyhose.” Coming in second was the answer:  “I am not on one side or the other and would wear or not wear pantyhose based on the appropriateness of the situation/environment.” That answer got 3 votes (13%).

I wrote (ladies only please) at the end of the poll question because I knew what answer men would give, and I really wanted to see what women would say. I always wondered if the votes were indeed by women only. I don’t know, but there were 2 votes (8%) for the answer: “I choose not to on my own personal volition because I think pantyhose are uncomfortable, impractical and/or unnecessary.”  We know women cast that vote.

But here’s the real news: Not a single vote came in for the answers: “I choose not to because I believe in and completely support the cause for the bare legs movement … period;” or for: “I choose not to because the excuse now exists thanks to the bare legs movement.”

Hey, I’ll take our minor victories anywhere I can get them.

  • Today’s “Bear Legs culture:

This is the poll, attached to the post “Why Bears don’t wear Pantyhose,” that launched my whole “bear” legs terminology.  The answer that won this poll was: “Can’t die a horrible death soon enough.”  Still, it got only 60 votes out of 110 (55%).  Taking second place with 26 votes (24%) was the answer:  “Is to punish men (for being men).”  Sorry about that, guys.

OK, are you wondering what poll got the most activity and won by the very widest margin?  This won’t come as a surprise to most of you. It was attached to my first (and arguably best) post of 2011 (Jan. 9), titled “Why Not Pantyhose and Open-Toe High Heels?”  This post still gets comments and generates discussions, remaining one of the most popular on this blog.

  • Pantyhose with open-toe high heels?

This poll generated 160 votes – by far, the most activity of all the other polls.  The winner was the answer: “Absolutely! Yes, please!”  You gave that answer 151 votes (94%).  I’m so proud.  Getting only 7 votes (4%) was the answer: “No way! No How! Never!”  And just 2 voters (1%) selected the answer: “Who cares?”

Professional singer/dancer and TV personality Paula Abdul always wears sheer pantyhose during public events, and looks perfect in open-toe heels.

More than any of my other posts, “Why Not Pantyhose with Open-Toe High Heels?” struck a huge chord with you.  This was the post in which I first bashed all the so-called “fashion experts” for making up hard and fast rules that dictate what they say is acceptable or not for you to wear.  That anyone listens to these people is unfathomable to me.

I had no idea when I wrote it that this post would generate so many comments and poll votes.  I am so glad you overwhelmingly support the wearing of pantyhose with dress sandals.

Even more, I love it when celebs (by far the greatest influencers of fashion) completely disregard the advice of the “experts” and always wear pantyhose with open-toe heels.

Looking at the picture of Paula Abdul, I can’t imagine how there could be even a few people out there who still think this look is wrong.

Wrap-up

As much as I love my self-appointed mission of being the voice of hope and reason for the return of pantyhose to favor in all aspects of society, I couldn’t write this blog without your participation.  I try to make my posts compelling and entertaining, hoping to generate comments and discussion among you.  And I throw in polls to give you another avenue to express your views about pantyhose.

Sometimes, when more time than usual goes by between posts, I’m struggling to stay motivated or to come up with something I think you’ll care about.  The point is I do this for you.  I hope you will continue to contribute, and I hope more of you will get involved.

Finally, I could say this (and probably will) until I turn blue, but we owe our thanks to so many wonderful celebrities all over the world who turned out in droves wearing pantyhose this year. There’s not enough space to acknowledge all of them, but let me recognize a few we couldn’t have done without this year.

Ann Curry: She is beautiful, classy and professional. We owe her so much gratitude for keeping the bar high in TV journalism.

Carly Foulkes, the beloved T-Mobile Girl:  Now we know it wasn’t a fluke. I don’t know how many commercials she’s made now, but she’s always in one of those famous pink dresses, with awesome pumps and sheer nude pantyhose.  She’s a young hottie who potentially can influence an entire generation to dress more femininely.

Julianna Margulies is one the most professional Hollywood actress, always dressing professionally, especially wearing elegant outfits with sheer pantyhose everywhere she goes.

Julianna Margulies:  She has always been professional and classy, and now, as the star of “The Good Wife,” she can do no wrong.

She’s a great actor on arguably the best show on TV, and so, in her we have a highly visible celeb who wouldn’t be caught dead not wearing pantyhose.

Hopefully, Julianna will influence those career women who don’t think there’s anything wrong with showing up for work with bear legs.

What I like most about Julianna is that not only does she always wear pantyhose on the job, but also out in public and on late night talk shows.  She’s truly a devoted wearer.

Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Rihanna, Selena Gomez and other young professional entertainers are doing the right thing.

Perry and Gaga, and Paula Abdul are practically pantyhose ambassadors because they wear not only on stage, but also out in the public eye.

These women are priceless contributors to our cause.

Kate Middleton: Obviously, much has been made of her commitment to wearing pantyhose, and rightfully so.  She clearly is all about class and elegance and doing the right thing.  In all fairness, she may be the one woman who singlehandedly changes the course of pantyhose’s fate in global fashion circles.

Yes, 2011 was a great year for pantyhose. We’ve made up so much ground, and I am looking forward to more of the same in 2012 and beyond.

Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

Return of Pantyhose TV ads a Good Sign

Robin Maryland, president, ActSensuous

Miss the old days when pantyhose TV commercials were a staple of advertising during the 1970s, 80s and certainly into the 90s, but not since?

Well, Hanesbrands announced recently that its L’eggs brand will return to television commercials for the first time since 1997.  “You’re in luck: You’re in L’eggs” apparently is the new message.

Is this an indication that pantyhose are officially back?  Not exactly. An Associated Press article quoted a Hanesbrands report of a nearly 70 percent drop in sales in 2006 compared with the volume that the “Number One seller of hosiery” enjoyed in 1995.

And during the past several quarters, the company reported sales drops in sheer hosiery, including a 9 percent decrease during the fourth quarter of 2010 (reported on January 27, 2011), while innerwear, outerwear and men’s underwear all posted double-digit growth.

Still, there is reason for optimism, as noted in Hanesbrands’ announcement.

Apparently, the new L’eggs commercials follow an animated character as she prepares various outfits (each with pantyhose) for different parts of her day from dressing for the office to going out at night.  The idea is to show how L’eggs pantyhose complement various fashion niches.  Animated, huh?  Hmmmmmmm.

I’ve often fantasized about how great if would be if a Hollywood actress endorsed ActSensuous?  I don’t mean as an official spokesmodel.  We’re not there yet.  But it’s fun to imagine having a celebrity who makes it known that, when she wears pantyhose, she chooses to wear ActSensuous.

I like to contemplate which star would be perfect for ActSensuous?  While there are so many beautiful and glamorous celebs out there, the list of those who actually would be perfect for ActSensuous would seem to me to be quite small.  That’s because, while any pantyhose looks fabulous on a beautiful celebrity, let’s face it – the Number One feature of ActSensuous is THEY’RE EXTREMELY SEXY!

Since ActSensuous are 100 percent nylon and completely sheer to waist, the actress who makes ActSensuous her preferred pantyhose would have to be … you know, really sexy!  She couldn’t be just a beauty who has the class to always wear pantyhose, but rather, someone who truly “gets it;”  someone who honestly believes that pantyhose are sexy.

See how the list would have to be a short one?  Here are some of my favorite actresses, and the pros and cons about their being the right celebrity to represent ActSensuous:

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman – She is a very talented actress.  She’s gorgeous and just oozes femininity.

She’s also very classy, which I like.  She always wears pantyhose in all the right settings.

Yes, Nicole is one Hollywood actress I would love to see in ActSensuous pantyhose.

She is sexy, but does she really think pantyhose are sexy, or is it that she just has the class to always wear for the right occasions?

Nicole is “To Die For” in pantyhose, but I’m not sure she’d really be the perfect celeb for ActSensuous.  But I do love the idea of it.

Julianna Margulies – She wouldn’t be caught dead not wearing pantyhose for the camera or during a public appearance, which is reason enough for me to love her.  And she’s a great actress.  But do you think she sees pantyhose as sexy?  I doubt it.

Parker Posey

Parker Posey – A few years ago, she might have been the obvious choice.  She actually carried the nickname “Miss Pantyhose” because of her devotion to wearing in her movies.  I have to think that she is one who truly thinks pantyhose are sexy, which makes her perfect for ActSensuous.  My only concern is that she isn’t as visible today as some of the other stars I’ve mentioned.  But she remains a very intriguing possibility.

Catherine Zeta-Jones – Another talented actress whose beauty is compelling.  She has so much class and grace.  I never see her not wearing pantyhose for the right occasion.  She’s sexy, but I think her commitment to wearing pantyhose is all about the class.

Lucy Liu

Lucy Liu – She is awesome!  She is gorgeous, very sexy and just plain adorable.  When she wears pantyhose and high heels with a suit or a dress in some of her TV or movie roles, she is incredible.

Unfortunately, I don’t see her in those outfits often enough, and rarely in pantyhose during public appearances or awards shows.

I love her, but sadly, I don’t really think of her as “a pantyhose girl.”

Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh – Maybe a few years ago.  Today, I just never see her in pantyhose anymore.

I put her on my list because I love her more than any other actress.  I think she’s the most beautiful woman in the world for the many qualities she possesses.  She epitomizes femininity, class, grace and elegance, while projecting a physically powerful persona.

Hollywood directors say she is the most professional actress out there, and she is completely genuine.

She looks awesome in a dress and pantyhose and high heels, but one would be hard pressed to see her dressed that way today.  It hurts me to admit that she’s not the one to represent ActSensuous, but I’ll never make a list of beautiful and wonderful actresses that doesn’t include Michelle Yeoh.

Zhang Ziyi

Zhang Ziyi – If Michelle Yeoh is the most beautiful woman in the world, then Zhang Ziyi is the most gorgeous woman in the world.

Literally, from head to toe, Ziyi is total perfection.  Most of the movies she’s in are kung fu period pieces, which means she’s wearing robes and pajamas.

But of all the stars out there, no one wears beautiful skirts, dresses or suits with pantyhose and high heels in real life as often as Ziyi.

Zhang Ziyi

Ziyi might not necessarily be “a pantyhose girl,” but she has the class and sense to always do what’s right and wear pantyhose for all public appearances.

She might not be the household name in the U.S. that Michelle Yeoh is, but her recent track record of appearing in Hollywood movies (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Hero,” and “Rush Hour 2,”) makes it just a matter of time before she is.

She is magnificent in every way, and to be able to say that Zhang Ziyi wears ActSensuous pantyhose would make my mission in life complete.

Could it really happen?  The very thought of it is too thrilling for me to be able to believe that it could.

Karen Mok

Karen Mok – Someone who truly “gets it,” Karen Mok seems to live in pantyhose.  She is ultra feminine, very lovely, and has killer legs.

Karen Who?  Precisely.  No one in the U.S. knows who this very talented Chinese singer/actress is.  You might have seen her in Jet Li’s “Black Mask,” in which she plays a quirky library coworker to Li’s character.

Karen isn’t as known to us as the likes of Michelle Yeoh, Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi and Shu Qi because “Black Mask” might be the only “mainstream” movie she’s been in, but she’s huge throughout Asia.

Karen Mok

Probably her best role was in “So Close,” a Chinese movie in which she starred, alongside Shu Qi.

Karen is brilliant.  I think she speaks five languages.  I believe it’s just a matter of time before Karen becomes more of a household name in the Western world.  When she does, she’d be my choice to represent ActSensuous.  As lovely as she is, she’s also very cute and has a great personality.  But mostly, she exudes sexiness, and I would think as devoted to pantyhose as she is, she and ActSensuous would be a perfect match.

Milla Jovovich

Milla Jovovich – Yes, Miss Resident Evil herself.  Let me tell you, she is awesome.  What’s not to love?  She is beautiful and adorable.

She can shoot and kick zombie butt with the best of them, yet, she also does dress-up extremely well.

And not just in her movies.  I’ve seen her wearing pantyhose during public appearances, awards shows and talk shows more than anyone.

Milla is cool, and she is HOT.  I don’t know if she thinks pantyhose are sexy, but from what I’ve seen of her, I wouldn’t doubt it.   One thing is for sure:  She is incredibly sexy in them.

It would be awesome to say that when Milla Jovovich wears pantyhose, she chooses to wear ActSensuous.

Bai Ling

Bai Ling –  I know what you’re thinking … Bai Ling?   Seriously?   YES!   I mean she is a little wild, a bit strange, definitely out there.  But she is unique and really cool, and I just love Bai Ling.

For one thing, she is a fine actress.  I’m not kidding.  If you don’t think so, you probably haven’t seen her in “Red Corner” opposite Richard Gere, or “Paris.”  Those were excellent roles for her and she was fantastic in them.

Bai has tremendous talent.  It’s just that she usually doesn’t choose quality roles or well-written screenplays.

Bai Ling

Bai always seems to wear wild outfits, but she is a breathtakingly beautiful girl and she’s got gorgeous legs and feet.

And in the few times I’ve seen her in a pretty outfit with pantyhose and high heels, she’s unreal.

Bai Ling is exotic and ultra sexy.  She might be the one actress who, more than anyone, would truly “get” ActSensuous.

She might not give pantyhose much thought, but I’ll bet that when she does, she’d prefer to wear pantyhose that were created and designed to be very sexy.  Just like she is.

Yes, when it is all said and done, I can’t help but feel that Bai Ling belongs in ActSensuous pantyhose.  If I could have whomever I wanted, I would choose Bai Ling to be the Hollywood actress who makes it known that when she wears pantyhose, she wears ActSensuous.

Please, someone get me Bai Ling.

NOTE:  There certainly are other suspects I’ve considered, but I left them out for space reasons.  But here are a few who deserve honorable mention:

Obvioulsy, I love Sandra Bullock, but while she most often wears pantyhose in movies and sometimes during public appearances, she’s another one who I think chooses to do so because she has class and professionalism.  I don’t really consider Sandra a “pantyhose girl.

Gong Li

Named one of the “50 Most Beautiful Women in the World,” Chinese actress Gong Li is amazing.  She is devastatingly gorgeous and looks incredible in pantyhose and heels.

Unfortunately, it’s not often one can  see her in pantyhose when she makes public appearances, but this one at right, makes me wonder why she doesn’t show off this look all the time.

While she is a superstar throughout Asia, she’s been in a few Hollywood movies, such as “Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Hanibal” and “Miami Vice,” where she looked stunning in a suit and pantyhose and heels.

In the end though, I’ve seen too many cases where Gong Li embraces the bare legs look in the public spotlight, which, of course, means she’s not the most likely candidate to represent ActSensuous.

Finally, I just adore Chinese-American Hollywood actress Joan Chen.  I’ve never seen her in a movie in which she didn’t wear beautiful dresses and pantyhose and high heels.   She is so gorgeous and glamorous, but I can’t find one photo of her wearing pantyhose in public.  Not one.

I am so intrigued by her, but she has become too Americanized and follows the trend of most Hollywood actresses in doing the bare legs thing.   To me, that is just sad.

Tell us, who do you think should be the celebrity who, when she wears pantyhose, chooses to wear ActSensuous?

Seriously, why not Pantyhose and open-toe high heels?

Robin Maryland, president, ActSensuous

December 30, 2010 — Since I started my blog in May 2009, I’ve written 30 posts.  I am really proud of a few of them: “Why Bears don’t wear Pantyhose,” “A good time to be Asian,” “Even Aliens wear Pantyhose.”

But the post that has been, by a wide margin, the most read, and seemingly, the most appreciated, is the one I wrote in January of this year, “Why not Pantyhose with open-toe high heels?”  So, as 2010 comes to a close, and I want to finish as strongly as I began this year, I feel compelled to give you what you obviously want.

Now, please don’t think that I couldn’t come up with something fresh and so decided to reheat this one.  OK, that’s actually pretty much the case, but during this entire year, I’ve been struck with what the stats show – that, when I have, for example, 200 visits in a day, 120 people read “Why not Pantyhose with open-toe high heels?”

Similarly, more readers have participated in the poll attached to that post than any of the others.  And the results?  As of this writing, of the 109 votes cast, 106 (97 percent) were for “Absolutely! Yes, please!” (to wearing pantyhose with open-toe high heels); only three were for “No way! No how! Never!” (3 percent); and zero for “Who cares?”

Because this post, and the ongoing debate over the subject, struck such a nerve with you, I decided to dig a bit further into the matter.  In January, my post began this way:

Lately, I’ve read several posts on various blogs in which girls are asking for advice about what to wear to a special event.  Often – and I love this – they are open to wearing pantyhose but for the fact that they want to wear some sexy open-toe high heels and believe one is not supposed to wear pantyhose with such shoes.   Who made that rule?

Today, my question is:  Who made these people “fashion experts?”

This time, instead of stating my views, I went the scientific route and visited some websites of fashion magazines.  Like everything else on the Internet, you can find tons more information than you’re looking for, so if you want to see some of what I saw, you can write this in your Google search engine: top fashion experts on pantyhose and open-toe shoes

In the interest of keeping the length of this post reasonable, I’ve selected for your viewing pleasure just three excerpts of advice/opinions about the topic from “fashion experts.’’

Here’s the question posed to the experts:

Should you wear stockings with open-toe shoes?

(Stockings?  Who wears stockings today?  I’m already offended.  Why couldn’t they just write pantyhose?)

Below, you’ll see direct quotes from some of what these “experts”  wrote, a blurb about who they are and their qualifications (as well as mug shots where available), and my polite response to their idiotic statements.

  • “I view it as one of the worst fashion offenses a woman can commit…   “When I see a woman wearing stockings with open-toed shoes, my first thought is that she must have some kind of nasty toenail fungus or calves covered with varicose veins.  Wearing stockings when it is not appropriate to wear stockings always makes it look as though you have some dirty little secret to hide. So if you must wear stockings, wear them with sensible shoes.  And if you must wear open-toed shoes, make sure that your toes are showing.  After all, that is the whole point of open-toed shoes in the first place.”
Marlin Bressi

(Marlin Bressi:  An award-winning hairstylist and beauty expert whose work has appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers on several websites, such as Suite101.com, where he was Beauty Editor for two years.)

My polite response:    Hey, Marlin, it could be that the reason you used to be the beauty editor for two years is that someone finally realized that you actually have no sense of fashion.  You said: “If you must wear open-toed shoes, make sure that your toes are showing…”  Uh, two things for you, dude:  1.) Toes most certainly will be showing in open-toe shoes; 2.) Toes do show through pantyhose.  Nylon is sheer.  That means they’re see-through.  Go back to strumming your guitar and smoking dope, dope.   By the way, real nice outfit.

  • “Breathless with anticipation and wondering if you can wear pantyhose with bare toes?  Relax, take a breath. The answer is no. Pantyhose and bare toes are not complimentary.”
Anne Warchol

(Anne Warchol: A retired mother of three married children. People think I’m in my 30s, and I never tell them I’m 50.)

My polite response:    I got news for you, Anne.  It ain’t just that people think you’re in your 30s (maybe a couple of the neighborhood kids where you live).   They also think you’re a moron.   “…wondering if you can wear pantyhose with bare toes?”  Seriously?  You can’t even pose the question properly.  Of course one can wear pantyhose with bare toes.  What – you think pantyhose are usually worn over socks?  “Pantyhose and bare toes are not complimentary.”  Huh?  Anne, you’re not only not qualified to weigh in on the topic at hand, you’re not qualified to leave your house.  And get a hairdo, will ya?  How can you hope to be thought of as a fashion expert with that do?

  • “Tights and stockings should not be paired together.  No way.  No how…”

(Chelia Copeland:  Highly motivated, creative and versatile journalist with a graduate degree in journalism.  Over five years of writing/editing experience at a variety of newspapers, magazines, web sites, publishing companies and organizations.  No photo available.)

My polite response:   Chelia, you’re a journalist with a graduate degree in journalism?  You’ve been a professional writer and an editor?  Well, so have I, and when I see two mistakes in one paragraph, I stop reading.  First, the issue is whether one should wear stockings with open-toe shoes, yet, your opening statement is “Tights and stockings should not be paired together.”  Huh?  The question was pairing hosiery with open-toe shoes, not pairing tights and stockings.   Why would anyone do that?

Then, you write that you have “over” five years of writing/editing experience …”  Didn’t you learn in journalism school that the word “over” refers to a position in space, such as over the hill, or over the rainbow?  You should have written that you have “more than” five years of writing/editing experience …

Whenever professional writers get the little details wrong, they lose credibility in my book.  You lost me after your first paragraph, Chelia, and I stopped reading.  So, while I don’t know why you are arguing against wearing hose with open-toe shoes, I really just don’t care what you have to say.  You have no credibility with me because, if you’re this sloppy in your own profession, you’re not qualified to comment on what is or isn’t fashionable.  And what kind of name is Chelia, anyway?  Bimbo.

There, see how delicately I handled these so-called experts  and their idiotic statements?   Sorry, but I have little patience with stupid people – especially those who tout themselves as experts and then have the nerve to publish their views, despite the fact that they can’t construct a simple sentence.   I mean one knucklehead wrote that wearing pantyhose with open-toe shoes is ugly because the “seem” shows.  I guess he means the “seam.”

sbI wonder if any of these people have really seen a woman wearing pantyhose with open-toe shoes lately?   Could anyone tell Sandra Bullock (left) she can’t wear pantyhose with open-toe shoes?

And in the case of sheer nude pantyhose, in many cases, unless you get probably way too close and/or stare with great intensity, you can hardly tell if a lady is wearing pantyhose or not.  And what if a delicate little seam shows?   Heck, I think that’s sexy.

Seriously, who made these people “fashion experts?”

As long as barely-educated windbags have a forum to express themselves, unfortunately, some women will be influenced by their stupid opinions.  I should point out that, thankfully, there are several writers taking the exact opposite position, so perhaps it all balances out.

One positive about this raging debate is that there is one.  I mean as long as so many women are asking, and so many “experts” are answering, at least it’s a good sign for pantyhose lovers that so many people care.  Unfortunately, I believe the prevailing thought is this:

“The universal no-no is to never wear sheer nude hosiery with open toe shoes or strappy sandals — it just looks tacky.”

So states fashion expert Sharon Haver of www.focusonstyle.com

I disagree with her.   Fortunately, so do many women who most influence fashion – actresses from throughout the world.   Check out the celebrities below (starting from the second row down.  I don’t know why the first three pics are repeating in this gallery).   Who’s going to tell these women they are committing a fashion no-no?

Happy New Year, everyone!
